West Marin Craftsman, New Residence, San Geronimo CA
Every vacant home site has unique characteristics which require architects to adapt their design. For this home in Western Marin County, the site offered several difficult constraints. The property sat at the bottom of a steep slope and was mostly covered by a large stand of Douglas-fir trees. The challenge was to design a “green” 3,500 square foot home which didn’t feel like your conventional “up-hill” home that also minimized the number trees removed. What developed was a highly environmental-conscious, craftsman-style home that is stepped and bunkered into the hill. Unlike most hillside homes where outdoor living is located on raised wood decks, the best quality of this 4 bedroom home is the way all the lower living space has access to the large on-grade patio. Some of the homes “green” features include high-efficiency radiant floor heating, low-e glazing for all the doors and windows, engineered wood framing, Energy Star appliances and low VOC interior paints. Additionally, all the trees removed were milled into usable lumber for framing and trim. |
